Hi all I'm struggling with a customer's computer. He has an ATI Radeon X1650 Pro PCI-Express card, and just upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium from XP. So here's the problem. Windows 7 installation failed (hanged with a blank screen) with the card installed, but completed when I used integrated graphics. Afterward I installed the card, booted into Windows, and it installed its own drivers. After this I can't boot into Windows anymore (though I can boot into safe mode).

Smells like a driver issue to me. I checked all the other threads on this forum, and I found that ATI haven't released drivers for this card for Win7. So I downloaded the last Vista drivers with support, but it doesn't install the driver. The installation completes successfully, but I can't manage to find a way to get Win7 to replace its own driver with the (older) ATI driver. I also tried Windows Update, as well as manually accessing the Windows Update Catalog. Okay, some 'progress' made. I re-downloaded the driver file from ATI's web site, and installed it.

This time the driver itself installed correctly, and I could see the driver version numbers and everything (as 'ATI', not 'Microsoft') in the device manager (before I restarted the computer). But when I restarted, when it reached the point where it previously froze with a black screen, I now get a BSOD for a few milliseconds, and then the computer reboots. I may mention that this card works perfectly in Windows XP, as well as in Win7 (without the driver installed). Can you disable the inregrated graphics in the bios. Ive just been to the ati site and the 1650 isnt supported but you can try and install it with vista drivers they say - also you could try the 9.3 version - you didnt say whether it was 32 or 64 bit so I ll link you to the 32 bit page with the instructions To get this driver to install do the following if it wont install normally: To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install. 9.3 OR 9.2 version can be found here.

Pure guess 1. Download and install Directx 9.0c Redist (AUG 2009) full version for XP (it installs fine on Win7!) 2. Update to latest DirectX for Win7,Vista,XP (Feb 2010 Redist edition!) The one package updates all of these versions! 9.3 Vista were the last drivers for this card which should run. Try 9.1's then 9.2's as well.

Keep trying different versions and one will click into place for Open GL/Catalyst etc. Not sure whether you need to install as administrator plus 'Compatability' driver mode I'm not sure if you also need to install older version of visual C too or if Cv3.5 in Win7 supports it. It would be version visual 2 SP1 2008 C for catalyst.
